Room Codes & How to Join Friends

How room codes work in Dumb Ways to Build: creating lobbies, inviting crossplay friends on PC, PS5 and Xbox, and fixing connection problems.

Quick Answer: How Do I Play With Friends?

Create a lobby from the pause menu or The Hub, then share the room code with friends. Everyone must be on the same game version (update before connecting). There is no matchmaking — co-op is friends-first by design. The most common connection issue is version mismatch, which is fixed by having everyone update to the latest patch.

  • Host: The Hub → Co-op → Create lobby. Room code appears on screen.
  • Join: The Hub → Co-op → Enter room code. Friends can also join via platform invite (Steam/PSN/Xbox).
  • Version mismatch: everyone must run the same game version. Check for updates before connecting.
  • Crossplay: works across Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch.
  • Disconnects: the world persists on the host — rejoining resumes wherever the host is.

Co-op Job Tactics

  • Designate roles: one Nail Gun builder, one Sledgehammer clearer, up to two scouts.
  • Normal Jobs: any composition works. Use these to practice co-op communication.
  • Crisis Jobs: the builder/clearer split is essential. The builder focuses on construction while the clearer removes debris and hazards.
  • Master Builder: full 4-player crew recommended. One builder, one clearer, two scouts who also build.
  • Proximity chat: use it to coordinate. The helium voice effect activates near helium tanks on some job sites — it is funny but can make callouts hard to understand.
