Job Mechanics

The First Hurdle

Normal Jobs are designed to teach the physics building system one concept at a time. The first job introduces planks and nails; the second adds ramps; the third tests everything together. Each Normal Job is a stepping stone — there is no penalty for taking your time.

Physics Basics

Structures in Dumb Ways to Build follow real(ish) physics. Wooden planks have weight, nails create fixed joints, and unsupported spans will sag or collapse. The game does not punish experimentation — every collapse is a learning moment.

💡 Build wider than you think you need. A two-plank-wide bridge is dramatically more stable than a single-plank tightrope, and the extra material costs nothing.

Step-by-Step Strategy

Preparation

No special preparation needed for your first Normal Job. The game provides all necessary materials. Just understand the controls: place planks, fire nails, and move your Bean to the objective.

The Core Approach

  • Survey the gap or obstacle before placing any planks.
  • Build from the starting side outward — do not try to leap-frog.
  • Nail every joint. Un-nailed planks slide and tumble.
  • Test your structure by walking on it before committing your full weight.

After the First Job

Completing your first Normal Job unlocks Safety Sam (Bean-sona) and opens the next tier of Normal Jobs. It also counts toward the "First Job Complete" certification and contributes to your overall completion percentage.

💡 Replay Normal Jobs with different tools to learn their strengths before tackling Crisis Jobs.

Rewards
